Happy 250th!

As we work together to achieve a better America and attempt to emulate the best that our nation has produced over its 250-year history, let’s keep in mind the intended beneficiaries of our efforts – the generations that succeed us. As John Adams put it in a letter to his wife Abigail on the eve of the Declaration of Independence:
“…I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet, through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is more than worth all the means.
And that posterity will triumph…”
More recently, Leah Greenberg put it in her eloquent article on this year’s celebration of American independence:
“We lean into the legacies of every struggle that came before us, knowing that at every stage, for every movement from the abolitionists to the suffragettes to civil rights, victory was uncertain and at times seemed near-impossible. But they fought on anyway because the fight — for a better country and a better future for everyone who lives here — was worth it.”

Once again, the Indivisible WA-8 Events Team is outdoing itself with its plans for our celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence. We’ll have live entertainment and lawn games with prizes! It’ll be fun for the whole family. And there’ll be free hot dogs and lemonade for anyone who can spell “semisesquicentennial” (or even pretends to do so).
Where: Lake Sammamish State Park, Kokanee Shelter
When: Saturday, July 11, from 11:00 a.m. – 2::00 p.m.
Note: You’ll need a Discover Pass for parking, which can be purchased at the park or here.
Please bring:
- A dish to share (in a take-home or compostable container – our goal is zero waste)
- Donations for Snoqualmie Valley Healing Center, providing services for the unhoused: most needed are laundry supplies, personal hygiene items (shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste) and clothing.

GOTV Postcards in Swing
States for November
This year there’s a real shot at flipping control of both the House and the Senate – but with the current regime doing everything it can to suppress the vote in swing states, every vote will matter.
Postcards have been demonstrated to increase voter turnout by 1.3%. In many races, particularly in swing states and districts, that could spell the difference between a Congress controlled by Democrats and a Congress controlled by the likes of Mike Johnson and his cronies.
Postcarding is easy, and there’s still plenty of time to participate. Just email WA8postcards@gmail.com. We provide you with the postcards, the script and the addresses and you have until mid-October to complete them and send them out.
We can chart this country on a new course, but only by getting out the vote!

Yes, There Is A Plan
To Protect The Vote
Indivisible National co-founders Leah and Ezra were joined on What’s the Plan? this past week by Corey Dukes from Protect Democracy, and the three of them provided a wealth of strategies that people can adopt to protect our elections, defend our democracy, and win win win in November. Check it out here.
One of the ways that each of us can help protect the vote locally is by adopting a ballot box. The Adopt A Ballot Box program is run by King County Elections, and in order to participate, you must attend one of its two virtual ballot box observation training sessions:
- Thu, July 23, 6:00 – 7:00 pm
- Wed, July 29, 4:00 – 5;00 pm

Our Members Of Congress
Need To Hear From You
While we work to achieve a new direction in November, we can’t forget that the current regime continues to take up measures designed to fund its current war and set the stage for a new one with Cuba, to establish mass detention facilities, and to surveil Americans. Our Members of Congress need to hear from us, and Indivisible makes it easy for you to communicate with them on these and a variety of other subjects.
The button below will help you find a menu of actions that’ll have the most impact based on your federal and state elected officials:

We Made A Mistake
And we’re not above admitting it.
Monday night, Police Chief Steve Mylett was unanimously confirmed as Chief of Police of the Issaquah Police Department.
We previously had asked community members to oppose Chief Mylett’s confirmation, but after hearing from people who had worked with him, and after meeting with Chief Mylett himself, we realized that we had too quickly jumped to conclusions about him that were unwarranted. The group that met with him walked away from that meeting believing Chief Mylett to be open, honest, and authentic, and the best choice to lead the Issaquah Police Department.
We regret our initial opposition and wish Chief Mylett success in his important new role.
If you’d like more information on how we came to support Chief Mylett’s confirmation, you can find them in this open letter on the subject.
