Memorial Day Tribute

With members of our military being sent into an illegal, unprovoked war, with some having died as a result, we want to take time to consider Memorial Day and what it means.

Holding a spring tribute to soldiers who died in battle is a tradition that began during the American Civil War. The death toll was high. Communities were devastated. It was a truly defining war for our nation. Early on, ceremonies were held in small American towns to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice. People who had been freed from slavery paid tribute in 1865 to fallen Union soldiers. A national commemoration was held in 1868 for those who died. Over time, these observances expanded, becoming a national holiday of remembrance for those who died in all of America’s wars. Since 1971, Memorial Day has been a federal holiday – a day to remember the men and women who died while serving in our country’s armed forces. While it is a day of honoring those who gave their lives, it is also a day of grief for their sacrifice and loss.

Today, we pay tribute to one of the many who lost their lives in combat, Roger Nelson Moore. Roger served as an Army Paratrooper in the Special Forces (101st Airborne). He was killed in action on May 24, 1966, in Vietnam. Roger was a father to two sons and the grandfather of our Indivisible WA8 friend, Chandra.

To Roger’s family, and to all members of Indivisible Washington’s 8th District who have family members and friends who fought, suffered injuries, and particularly those who lost their lives, we see you, we support you, and we honor the sacrifice and the memory of your loved ones.

Sign the “No Flock in Issaquah” Petition by June 1st

Thanks to the action taken by our community, Flock cameras have been removed from the federal DOJ grant awarded to the Issaquah Police Department, and the Mayor has announced there will be a vote on June 1st for a resolution confirming the city’s commitment to working with the City Council before any other Automatic License Plate Reader systems are considered for the city.

This is a big accomplishment, BUT, our work is not done yet. Nothing is official until we have an approved resolution and City Ordinance.

Now is the time to make your voice heard! The No Flock in Issaquah petition will be delivered to the City Council in person during the June 1st City Council meeting. If you live in Issaquah or go to Issaquah to shop, volunteer, enjoy city parks and amenities, etc., ALPRs will affect you.

If you haven’t done so yet, please follow the link and sign the petition before June 1st. And, please share it with others so they can sign on, too! You can also show support by attending the June 1st City Council meeting in person and consider giving public testimony.

Let’s keep the momentum strong going into the summer and show the Mayor and City Council that our community values our privacy and supports common sense limits on ALPRs in Issaquah.

This Memorial Day weekend, let’s honor our nation’s service members by also taking action and calling on Congress to end Trump’s unauthorized, unprovoked war on Iran.

The Department of Justice has created a $1.776B slush fund to pay insurrectionists with our tax dollars. Trump is also demanding permanent protection from prosecution for himself and his family, all in a “settlement,” supposedly in exchange for Trump dropping his lawsuit against the very government that he leads.

The slush fund is so toxic that even Congressional Republicans are backing away.

Let’s keep the pressure up. Tell Congresswoman Kim Schrier and Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell to block Trump’s $1.776 slush fund and create guardrails around federal settlement funds.
