Constituent Information

Tips for Calling Congress

  • Call early and often. Elected officials track the calls, emails, and letters they receive, and the opinions of their constituents really do impact their actions. Our CD-8 phone numbers are below. If that’s not your district, call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to be connected.
  • Tell them you are their constituent. Make sure you say that you are from the elected officials’ district or state—that personal connection is very important. Don’t be alarmed if they ask for your full name and address, as they may do this to ensure you live in their district.
  • Be clear and specific. Tell the elected leader exactly what action(s) you want the elected official to take. Saying “vote yes on bill XYZ” or “oppose Amendment 123” is much better than something generic like “please support our schools,” which could be interpreted in many different ways.
  • Be polite to Congressional staff. Most Congressional office phones are answered by underpaid and overworked staff who want to serve their communities. Your message will go much further if you treat the staffer with kindness while conveying your message.
