Our Lives. Our Communities. Our Democracy.

Making our voices heard!

Members of Indivisible WA8 and neighboring Indivisible groups, along with a growing number of community members, have been leaning into the work of our democracy and making sure our elected officials hear from us on issues affecting our lives, our communities and our democracy. Speaking up, asking questions, seeking answers, and being persistent at the local and federal levels brought these wins in June (and it’s only the 15th!):

  • The Issaquah City Council passed a city resolution confirming that the funds received from the DOJ grant awarded in January will not go toward Flock Cameras and declaring that it will not pursue any new ALPR proposals until a city ordinance is passed.
  • The Bellevue City Council unanimously adopted a one-year moratorium on accepting or processing applications to establish or develop detention centers in Bellevue. In addition, the council established a work plan for approaching the regulation of detention facilities in the city once the moratorium expires. More info here.
  • Representative Schrier reversed course and voted against extending the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act without safeguards to protect Americans from warrantless federal surveillance. Our constituent calls, emails, and outcry over Bill Pulte’s appointment as acting director of National Intelligence led enough House Republicans to join most Dems in blocking the FISA extension. And, with all this pressure, Pulte was pulled as DNI.

Please call or email Rep. Schrier to thank her for voting No on extending FISA without the needed reforms and for using her position in Congress to pressure Republicans to do the right thing! Email her here: https://schrier.house.gov/contact/email-me or call 425.657.1001.

In addition, dozens of folks showed up this weekend for our monthly community meeting and last (for now) Saturday sign-waving at Pickering Barn. History has shown that sustained, collective action defeats wannabe authoritarian regimes, and we are starting to see our work pay off. Let’s keep up the momentum as we head into the summer and prepare for a November election with many important initiatives, local races, and State Supreme Court seats up for grabs, plus congressional and senate seats nationally.

As we shared at our meeting on Saturday, we offer a variety of resources and actions to get involved because we know not everyone can do everything, but all of us can do something.

So, here’s what’s going on this week, and as always, Thank You for being part of this community of folks fighting against fascism and for our democracy.

Banners Over Issaquah Tuesdays at the Overpass

Tuesdays 4:30 P.M. – 5:30 P.M.

Register for event location

Join us Tuesdays at 4:30pm on the I-90 Exit 15 Pedestrian Overpass as we raise our banner to protest the illegal actions of our increasingly authoritarian government and in support of our democracy.

Stand alongside our banner or bring your own sign to wave towards the surface street side of the overpass. With heavy traffic both on the freeway and on the surface streets this is a high impact event.

A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Safety is always our utmost concern and we are always looking for more safety team members. If you are interested in finding out more about joining, email us at indivisiblewa8@gmail.com.
