Take Action to Keep This Washington Safer

With everything that we have seen since the beginning of this year, it is more important than ever to take action where we can. Whether it is calling to persuade or thank our members of Congress, engaging with our State Senator and Representatives, or voting to ensure our schools are funded, Indivisible WA8 strives to share actions you can take. This week’s newsletter offers many of these opportunities and we hope you will take them all.

Not a Penny More for ICE Brutality
Thank Senators Murray and Cantwell
As you probably already know, on January 7, Renee Good was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Then, on January 24, Customs & Border Patrol killed Alex Pretti.
Their murders were a direct result of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out in our communities by immigration and border control agencies. After Renee Good’s murder, the House passed the DHS funding bill that would hand MORE money to ICE and Border Patrol, and do little to rein in their abuses.
Senate Democrats announced they will NOT vote to pass the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included in it. Republicans cannot pass the bill without Senate Dems’ votes.
We are happy to see that Senators Murray and Cantwell have announced they WILL NOT support the additional funding in the bill as it stands. You can find their phone numbers and suggested script to thank them and strengthen their resolve.

Take Action to Make This Washington Safer
We are now two weeks into the 2026 legislative session and there are an overwhelming number of bills to take action on. TAN is an essential tool for using your voice and we hope you are receiving a daily email to help you take action.
Here are a few timely actions we want to highlight this week. If you have a TAN account, it will tell you if you’ve already taken this action.
Oppose SB6002 – regulating Flock (Autmated License Plate Readers). Tell legislators you’re angry about the bad version that the Senate Law & Justice committee just passed.
Support SB6062: The Individualized Justice for Youth Act by signing in PRO for the Senate Human Services Committee hearing.
Support SB 5917: Assuring Access in Washington to Medical Abortion. Contact the Senate Human Services Committee.
Oppose HB 2387: Reduced Accountability for Decertified Sheriffs by signing in Con to the House Community Safety Committee
Support HB 2597: Hold ICE accountable when they violate constitutional rights in WA state by signing in PRO to the House Civil Rights and Judiciary Committee
Our Advocacy and Persistence Pay Off
After a full year of Indivisible Washington’s 8th District urging Congresswoman Schrier to stand up to ICE, we were happy to see her not only vote AGAINST additional funding for DHS but also issue a public statement that takes a strong, principled stand. This is the first time she has made a public statement like this.

Hello, my name is [name] and my zip code is [your zip code].
I am calling to thank you for voting No on the DHS funding bill in the House and for issuing a public statement explaining your vote. When you publicly call out DHS and ICE abuses and assaults, you represent the majority of Americans and your constituents who do not support the weaponization of ICE against people in our country.
We need to see you continuing to use your platform in Congress in the usual ways – and in new ways – to stand up, call out, and oppose the weaponization of ICE.
You’ve got to be in the fight to win. We need you in the fight. Thank you.

Democracy Relies on Quality Public Education for All
Important Renewal School Levies
There are important renewal levies for Issaquah, Tahoma, Bellevue, and Renton school districts happening right now. Have you checked your mailbox for your ballot yet? Ballots are due by February 10th @8pm.
As you probably know, Washington state provides only a portion of the funding needed to operate and maintain schools.Levies and bonds help fund everything from classroom programs and support for students to technology, building maintenance, and new school construction. These voter-approved ballot measures allow the district to provide the level of education our community expects and our students need and deserve.
If you live in a different school district, please check that website for more information to see if you have a renewal levy on your ballot.
