Elections & What We Know

Trump is dangerous, disastrous – and colossally unpopular. Majorities of Americans do not support his policies, including his unauthorized war, as “Trump regret” surges. And, Republican candidates are losing.

In special elections across the country, Democrats are overperforming as voters turn away from Republicans. Since November 2024, Democrats have flipped 27 state legislative seats controlled by Republicans, while Republicans have failed to flip a single one.

Just last week, highly motivated Democratic voters in Arkansas turned out to win a special election and broke a supermajority in the state legislature. This was a district that Trump carried by 4 points in 2020, and Kamala Harris won by 2 points in 2024, but Alex Holladay won by double digits – very encouraging news as we approach elections in November.

In Texas and North Carolina, Democratic primary voter turnout surpassed Republican primary turnout levels. Voters are rejecting Trump’s and Republicans’ toxic agenda. And, despite Republicans’ desperate last minute changes to voting rules last week in Texas, they did not get the results they wanted.

At IndivisibleWA8, we know:

  • Elections matter.
  • Federal races – and city, county and state races – all matter.
  • Democracy is not a spectator sport. When we turn out, we win.
  • We can and we have flipped seats from red to blue.
  • We need to hold our electeds accountable and fuel the courage that they need to join us in the fight against authoritarianism.
  • Our rights and our democracy are on the line.

We know voters could put Democrats in control of the House in the November midterms, and perhaps in the Senate as well. But we know this will not be a typical midterm. From the anti-voter lawfare in Texas last week, we know we can expect dirty tricks, lies, and more. Working to inform voters about where and when to vote has never been more crucial.

Now is the time for us all to start planning – What will I do to help inform voters, support candidates working to protect our rights, and support the voter turnout we need to stop authoritarian takeover? Because, in the words of Indivisible co-founder, Leah Greenburg, “The arc of the moral universe does not bend on its own. It bends because people organize, resist, and refuse to comply with injustice – again and again, even when the path is hard.”

We will share opportunities to engage. We need you.
Your country needs you.
