Freedom is not something that’s put in your lap

– Fannie Lou Hammer (1917-1977)
Fannie Lou Hamer, the pivotal American leader of the civil rights movement, community organizer, and voting and women’s rights activist organized the historic “Freedom Summer” in 1964. The mission: to register as many African-Americans in Mississippi as possible to vote. Like John Lewis, Fannie Lou Hamer knew what is lost when the right to vote is threatened, suppressed, or taken away outright. She knew the power that voters hold.
Indivisibles trend toward hope. But we’re also angry – beyond angry – and disgusted at the predatory corruption and ruthlessness of the party in power. We know the stakes this election cycle will be pivotal. We know registered voters have the power this November.
And, we know elections are won or lost in the weeks leading up to the election. That is, right now.
Fannie Lou Hamer saw it and said it clearly, “we can’t sit down and wait for things to change”. Indivisibles do not sit down and wait. We know that, to have the election outcomes we want, all of us need to take action like never before – including doing things we’ve hesitated to do in the past. As Hamer assured the people of her time, one day we’ll be proud when we can say what we did to help achieve the election victories we urgently need in this moment of our lives and in our nation’s history.
